Message	This is how the starter bolts up to the bellhousing, see how the flywheel teeth stick out and the starter reaches out and grabs the flywheel? If you flywheel is damaged (this image is extreme, it does not require much material to be missing from the teeth) the starter gear will be unable to grip the flywheel to turn it, and instead grinds the starter gear against the flywheel, creating a loud "whaaaaaaaaaaaaa" sound. If you put the car and gear and give it a little shove to rotate the flywheel towards a better set of teeth, usually you can get it started that way.
